Global Mindset

While predicting the future is inherently challenging, it's evident that our children will inhabit an increasingly interconnected world. In this global landscape, characterized by economic, social, and cultural interdependence, cultivating a global perspective through education is paramount. As our students navigate this complex reality, they must possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for thriving.

Developing a Global Perspective

Bilingual proficiency, or even multilingualism, is only one advantage our learners will obtain to effectively communicate across diverse cultural boundaries. Being immersed into other cultures, naturally encourages our learners to become open-minded and further emphasizes GSB’s mission to develop global consciousness within our community.

Access to diverse texts

We believe that every student should see themselves reflected in the stories they read and also gain insight into the lives of others. Access to diverse texts helps students develop empathy, cultural awareness, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Representation Matters
Books have the power to shape perspectives, and we are committed to providing literature that reflects the diversity of our student body and the global community. By offering stories that highlight a wide range of cultures, experiences, and identities, we ensure that all students feel valued.

Building Empathy
Through exposure to diverse voices and perspectives, our students learn to think critically and empathize with people whose lives and experiences may differ from their own. This foundation of empathy prepares students to be compassionate, open-minded individuals who embrace diversity in all its forms.

A World of Stories
Our library and classroom resources include texts from authors around the world, featuring characters and stories that reflect a variety of cultural, social, and historical contexts. Whether exploring a picture book about a child's daily life in another country or diving into a novel that tackles important social issues, our students are encouraged to engage with literature that challenges and broadens their worldview.

History, culture, and social justice

We create opportunities for students to engage with history, culture, and social justice, empowering them to become compassionate and informed global citizens. Here is a sample of some of our initiatives:

Learning from History

  • Holocaust Remembrance Day: Our students reflect on the lessons of the Holocaust, exploring themes of resilience, empathy, and the importance of standing against injustice. Age-appropriate activities ensure students understand the significance of this history while emphasizing the need for tolerance and human rights in the present.

Celebrating Diversity and Culture

  • Black History: We honor the achievements, contributions, and experiences of Black individuals throughout history and today. Through texts, discussions, and projects, students deepen their understanding of the ongoing fight for racial equity and celebrate the rich diversity of Black culture.

  • Women’s History: We highlight the accomplishments of women across the globe, examining their contributions to science, art, politics, and society. Students learn about trailblazing women and discuss the importance of gender equity in shaping a better future.

  • Native American History: We explore the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American peoples. Students engage with stories, traditions, and contemporary issues to gain a fuller understanding of Indigenous communities.

  • Hispanic Heritage: We celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Latinx communities. Through storytelling, art, and music, students explore the vast diversity within Hispanic and Latin American cultures and reflect on the impact these communities have made locally and globally.

Global Kindness Day

This special day at GSB focuses on acts of kindness and empathy that transcend borders. Through activities and challenges, students learn how small, intentional actions can make a big impact on others, fostering a culture of care within our school and beyond.

Sustainability: from buzzword to a global mindset

At GSB, students learn about sustainability through hands-on lessons and real-world applications. Our school building serves as a model for sustainable design, featuring solar panels and an A rating for energy efficiency. One of our students said it best on his sign for the Climate March: “Melt Marshmallows, Not the Earth!”
