WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Week 1 (4 days)
Water Water Everywhere
Instructor Kerstin Haakenson (GSB)
Language German
Grades K-5
During this week we will explore water, its characteristics and importance for life on our planet. We will make experiments, explore books and learn about how to keep our water clean. We will spend time in the classroom and outdoors.

Week 2
Let’s Make a Movie!
Instructor Kerstin Haakenson (GSB)
Language German
Grades K-5
We will start by looking at the principle of flip-books and make one ourselves. In small groups we will then develop an idea for a short stop motion animation, take a lot of photos and make it happen. We will also learn a bit more about professional film making.

Week 3
Great Moments in History – A Comedy Show
Instructor Julia Stratman (GSB) & James Villemaire
Language English
Grades 2-6
We will be rehearsing a 45 minute show that will be presented at the end of the week (Friday 2-2:45PM). The format will be short comedic scenes, in which historical figures will deal with pivotal moments in their lives in very unique ways. The day will start with group and improvisation work that will translate into scene work and preparations for the show. Expect your kids to laugh and learn, while strengthening their acting muscles in a fun way. Scripted scenes will be used as a vehicle to help the children channel their energy into a lively exchange with their scene partners. Some of our 3rd and 4th graders have worked on scenes with James (more info on his adult classes here) before with great success. As one 4th grader put it: “Well, you can play the mom or whoever, and it can still sound like a real conversation”.

Weeks 3 & 4
Zeit für Geschichten – Storytime
Instructor Lena Bacan (GSB)
Language German
Grades K-5
We offer an opportunity for new(er) German language learners to practice their speaking and listening skills. Through a fun and interactive reading and storytelling approach, students will improve their understanding ability to use vocabulary. We will have stories of varying levels to choose from and will also create our own stories. At the end of each week the children will present a small shadowplay of their work.

Weeks 6 & 7 & 8
Language Explorers
Instructor Chandry Abreu (GSB)
Language English
Grade K-5, FOR GSB STUDENTS ONLY
Develop English language skills through art and play in a warm, inviting environment! Children will explore German School Brooklyn itself as well as neighboring locations such as Prospect Park. Students will have the opportunity to hear stories, practice storytelling, engage in art projects, practice interactive listening and responding, sing songs, hear music, and explore movement and word games.

Weeks 5, 6, 7 and 8
Kindertheater
operated by GALLI Theater NYC
Instructor: Simon Geronimo (Galli Theater NYC)
Join us for a summer full of fairy tale fun in German! Have you ever wanted to play a prince, princess, king or queen? Do the singing seven dwarfs or magical fairies tickle your fancy? Our camp is just the right place to try out different roles from different fairy tales while learning a language. We do warm up games, movement activities, theater games to prepare our little actors for the stage. We then choose a fairy tale that we will rehearse and act out as a group. Each child picks their own role and of course we have costumes to complete the transformation! On Fridays at 12:30pm, there is a presentation for friends and family.
